Dick: Novelty ıs ındeed a blessing, but there is also a great sameness to it... it's all relative, but ıt exists in every culture. There are certainly fewer choices out here. One or two types of beer, a few main dishes, McDonalds or BK but not both....

Andrew: I've been seeing that book around a lot. I read one of de Botton's other books and he seemed like a bit of a douche, but I'll check that one out, it sounds right up my alley.

Seth: I even feel superior making fun of them for feeling superior... there's just no escape...

I know people with this attitude - think of them as "travel fanboys". They just want something to feel superior about. Sadly an an "essential sameness of human life"...

The Art of Travel -- Alain de Botton (ISBN 13: 978-0375420825)
A good read for the answer-seeking traveler. It won't change your life, but I think that it does shed some light on the reasons why we travel -- some of which you touched on in this post.
Cheers,

Novelty is a blessing and the absolute antonym of mundaneness - completely different than sameness. Enjoy the travels.
